Most individuals who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can access NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme). The amount of funding & type of support depends upon the participant’s age and the severity of the condition.

The eligibility for NDIS is based upon an individual’s reduced capacity in either one or more of the areas mentioned below:

Communication

Social Interaction

Mobility

Learning

Self-care

However, the application procedure for NDIS is similar for all the above-listed conditions.

Does ASD qualify for NDIS?

Being a permanent disability, NDIS provides funding to individuals with Autism. This spectrum of disorder is actually the largest & primary disability category under NDIS. However, many individuals with NDIS do not fit clearly into one particular category and may require support in some other areas. For many individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the NDIS extends the opportunity to receive the supports that they have never had before in life. Thus before actually embarking on the NDIS journey, you are first of all require to ascertain that whether you are eligible for it or not.

Since there are certain degrees of ASD, NDIS looks at how much of the support is being needed to determine whether you are eligible for the scheme. If an individual has level 3 or level 3 autism, they are automatically considered for NDIS funding. (For further details, please refer to NDIS list A)

If an individual has level 1 ASD, he/she is required to provide further additional details on how this particular disability has impacted their lives across a wide range of areas, including communication, social interaction, mobility, learning, self-care & also management.

If an individual is diagnosed with level 1 ASD, (needing some support), Asperger Syndrome, Atypical autism, childhood autism, or some kind of pervasive developmental disorders that don’t meet certain severity criteria, further assessment of functional capability is being needed for determining the eligibility for NDIS funding. (For more information, please refer to NDIS list B).

Of course many individuals with ASD don’t fit clearly into one specific category & they may need support in some other areas. Since NDIS bases out all its decisions on evidence, thus the more participant is able to show that they require support in the above six mentioned areas, the more likely they are able to be approved for NDIS funding.

NDIS funding & Autism support

The type of support services available to individuals with ASD are listed below:

Speech therapy

Occupational therapy for increasing fine motor skills & capability to concentrate

Personal care support services (assistance in showering, toileting, dressing up, eating etc.)

Behavioral Support Service (developing relationships & behavioral management techniques)

Nutrition (diversification in eating habits)

Since each and every individual’s situation is distinct, thus no two NDIS plans are the same. The funding & type of support received solely depend upon the severity of the condition. It relies upon the kind of support required and personalized goals that the participant wants to achieve through NDIS assistance. The NDIS can, of course, funds an extensive range of supports, depending upon the individual’s condition. Every participant will be receiving a personalized NDIS plan that will provide an overview of the individual situation, supports needed, and how much funds are required.

NDIS pathway for ASD

The participants with 7+ years of age will be able to access funding through NDIS regular pathway.

However, if the child is between the ages of 0-6 years, then he/she will be able to access the NDIS funding via the Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) pathway.

The Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) program includes:

Early intervention for kids with either developmental delays or disability

This program acknowledges that early childhood intervention leads to much better and long-term results.

Utilizes a family-centric approach that supports inclusivity in mainstream settings along with building up child & family capacity

Connects kids families to services through access partners

NDIS planning & goals for ASD

If a child has developmental delays or disability, the planning process of NDIS is vital for getting the NDIS plan. Since funding will actually be determined based on individual goals, aligning all your goals with NDIS objectives is quite often a great way to begin.

The goal of NDIS is to actually support individuals with a disability for improving their independence, enhance participation in social & economic activities, and develop their capacities for engaging with the community. Thus it is an extremely good idea to be prepared for communication about all your child’s goals, their life, and all personalized needs by the time the NDIS plan meeting comes along.
While developing the child’s personalized goals, it is always a good idea to actually reflect upon the NDIS objectives & just consider how your child’s goals fit within such objectives.

One of the best ways to develop your child’s personal goals is to think upon what all is crucial for the kid’s development. This could include:

Improving communication

Improving motor skills & coordination

Increasing skills for leading independent living

Developing social connections

Learning ability

Accessing community activities

Apart from that, you could also think about all the supports that your kid receives now like speech or occupational therapy and just start developing the goals from there.

What is Autism?

Autism or ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) refers to an extensive range of conditions that are being characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behavioral patterns, speech & non-verbal communication.

Autism is a common type of developmental disorder that impacts the person’s social interaction, behavior, and capability to interact with the environment. ASD impacts an estimated 1% of the entire population (every one individual out of 100 is Autistic). An ASD is a collective term for several distinctive types of disorders that include autism, Asperger syndrome, and other pervasive developmental disorders that are not otherwise specified, PDD- NOS.

Since ADS is a spectrum disorder, every individual with Autism comprises a distinctive set of strengths and challenges. Thus there is a range of severity & characteristics being displayed by every Autistic individual. How the autism diagnosed individuals learn, think, and solve problems may range from highly skilled to severely challenged at the same time. Thus, some people with Autism may require significant support in daily lives while others diagnosed with ASD may require less support. In some other cases, they may live entirely independently.

Signs of ASD mostly start appearing by the age of 2 or 3. Some of the associated developmental delays may start appearing even earlier; it could be diagnosed as early as eighteen months of age. However, certain common signs are exhibited by individuals diagnosed with ASD (which will be discussed later).

Research studies have already illustrated that early intervention can lead to positive outcomes in the later life of individuals diagnosed with ASD.

Is ASD a permanent disability?

Yes, Autism is considered as the permanent disability without any cure.

Severity levels of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Since autism is a spectrum disorder, and this means an individual can be mildly, moderately or even severely autistic. Thus, there are always varying levels of severity. What is more, is that everyone diagnosed with ASD demonstrates additional associated symptoms like intellectual/ language impairments. For helping clinicians to describe the autism individual cases better, three levels of supports have been developed. Thus the clinicians are expected to diagnose the individuals with Autism at levels 1, 2, and 3.

These three levels actually reflect upon the capability of individuals to communicate, adapt to new change & new situations, manage life & also expand beyond the restricted of interests. Individuals at level 1 require relatively low support; people at level 2 require moderate support while those at level three require high level of support.

Although this idea of Autism levels makes logical sense, it is not always easy for the clinician to assign an ASD level, and also assigning these levels can be somewhat subjective. It is also possible for an individual to change their levels over time as their skills improve, and various issues like anxiety level decrease.

Level 1 autism

Level 1 Autism is the least severe & thus could actually be viewed as mild ASD. Individuals with level 1 ASD require the least level of support.
Individuals who qualify as diagnosed with level 1 ASD:

Struggle in initiating social interactions

Concerns with restrictive/ repetitive behaviors

Organizational, planning issues that hamper independence

Level 2 autism

Level 2 is the moderate range of ASD in terms of both severities of symptoms & requirements of supports. However, individuals who qualify having level 2 Autism require more support than ones with level1.

Individuals with level 2 Autism:

Face challenges in social situations with limited social interaction & narrow/ specific interests

Demonstrate restricted/ repetitive behaviors frequently

Level 3 autism

The level 3 Autism is actually the most severe type of ASD. The level 3 ASD needs a substantial level of support.

Individuals with level 3 Autism

Shows significant deficit in verbal, non-verbal & social communication skills

Restrictive/ repetitive behaviors that come in the way of independent functioning

Show significant level of distress/ difficulty in changing actions or focusing.

Autism: Signs & Symptoms

ASD is a neurodevelopment disorder that is being predominantly characterized by impairment in social functioning & communication disturbances. The behaviors associated with ASD fall into distinctive categories listed below:

Social impairments

Cognitive impairments

Communication difficulties

Repetitive behavioral patterns

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) begins during early childhood & eventually causes problems while functioning. It can be diagnosed at any age. In some children, symptoms and impairments are mild, while others may exhibit extremely severe of autistic behaviors.
Although there is no cure for Autism, early treatment can make a huge difference in many individuals’ lives.

Common symptoms & signs of Autism

All children develop linguistic, communication & emotional skills at different points of time; however, for an Autistic child, this particular development is being seriously impaired. Subsequently, it has an extremely significant impact on their lives. The common behavioral patterns being associated with ASD fall in two distinctive categories:

Impaired communication & social interaction

Restricted & repetitive behavioral patterns & interests

In some children, signs, symptoms and impairments are mild, while others may exhibit quite severe ASD behaviors. Some early warning signs of Autism may appear within first two years; however, some children may have many early signs & symptoms while others just have a few.

Common symptoms & signs of Autism include:

Lack of social or emotional exchanges, for example, pointing, showing things, smiling, etc

Lack of non-verbal communication like nodding, head shaking, or using hand gestures

Face difficulty in developing & also maintaining relationships that are appropriate to their age, like peer play or lacking close friends.

Delayed expressed speech & also lack of understanding of speech

Lack of eye contact while speaking

Loss of linguistic skills during any age

Following routines, behaviors & patterns excessively & becoming distressed through changes

Stereotyped/repetitive speech, mobility, or use of objects like rolling wheels in front of eyes, flapping their hands, or toe walking

Strong reaction to sensory inputs like sound, pain, or even textures

Restricted/ fixated interests like playing with only a few toys or discussing just certain topics

Aggressive towards others or self

ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is one of the common neurodevelopment disorders that occur in childhood. ADHD is characterized by difficulties in concentrating, attention, and impulse control that influence the individual’s day-to-day life. Most commonly, it is diagnosed during childhood, and often it lasts into adulthood.

Children who have ADHD may face trouble in paying attention, easily controlling their impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking what outcome will be), easily distracted, or maybe overly active. Although we may have these difficulties from time to time, individuals with ADHD may have quite significant & ongoing issues in these areas. This can impact their broader lives, especially their studies, work, and also relationships. ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) is an outdated term that was once utilized to describe the inattentive form of ADHD.

So, if a child has ADHD, this means he/she face difficulties in:

Paying attention

Being hyperactive

Controlling their impulses

Thus, children with ADHD symptoms may have more trouble than their peers while thinking, learning, expressing their feelings, or even controlling behaviors.

ADHD is not a specific disease or disorder with a particular cause, but it is a term for a broad range of symptoms. Around 2 to 3% of adults are also being diagnosed with this particular disorder. Although ADHD starts during childhood, its symptoms typically improve as the child grows older. Around 15% of the individuals continue to have this disorder as adults too. ADHD, if left untreated, can cause lifetime impairment. However, there are certain specific ways to manage them effectively.

Treatment for ADHD varies depending upon the specific needs of individuals. There are many specialized treatment options available for treating the symptoms of ADHD. This includes behavioral management strategies, psychological therapies, and medications.

All those with mild ADHD symptoms without any other developmental or mental health issues perform well by implementing a wide range of psychological strategies. But all those people with difficult to manage symptoms or some other mental health issues are quite often being benefitted through the combination of medication & psychological support at the same time.

ADHD (Attention Deficit/hyperactivity disorder) Description

ADHD (Attention Deficit/hyperactivity disorder) is a neurodevelopmental/ brain development disorder that typically impacts a large number of brain function areas. This disorder may cause hyperactivity, impulsive behaviors, and also attention-related problems. It typically interferes with a person’s capability to exercise age-appropriate control of behaviors and/ or cognition.

Although many young children may have a limited attention span and sometimes do things without even thinking, only a few children have attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. It affects 1 in 20 Australians. This is around 1.2 million people. However, most frequently, it is misunderstood and underdiagnosed. School children with ADHD symptoms may seem to be quite disruptive. The kids may tend to call out of their class & they may appear not to listen to their teachers. Also, the children may have difficulties as well for keeping up with their peers academically too.

Children with ADHD symptoms have more trouble than peers with thinking, learning, and even expressing their feelings or controlling behaviors. Children may appear to do silly/ irresponsible/ inappropriate things at home and in social settings. They may seem not to respond to any of the attempts in disciplining them. Children with ADHD symptoms are not willfully naughty. Their incapability to be good students or behave properly can be extremely distressing for them. Even adults can also have ADHD. Such adults in their working life may seem as careless and inefficient employees. Thus, when problems with attention, hyperactivity and even impulse control get into the way of your child’s life, it might be attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

ADHD is the most common disorder that is predominantly encountered in outpatient children & even in an adolescent’s mental health settings. This neurodevelopment disorder is ten times more prevalent in boys than girls.

Diagnosing ADHD

Children may be diagnosed with one of these three distinct types of ADHD, depending upon the specific symptoms:

Predominantly inattentive type ADHD

The children with this particular type of ADHD mainly have inattentive symptoms. The kids tend to face trouble while concentrating, remembering the instructions and even paying attention & finishing up their tasks.

Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type ADHD

The children with this type of ADHD symptoms are always on the go, face trouble while slowing down, and often act without thinking.

Combined type ADHD

The children with this type of ADHD may have both inattentive & also hyperactivity or impulsive symptoms. Under such a situation, the children tend to face trouble while concentrating, restless & always on the go. The kids may often act without thinking.

ADHD inattentive symptoms include:

Not being able to pay close attention to details & make careless mistakes

Failure in completing activities or being slowed down while completing them

Face difficulty in following all instructions & finishing up the tasks

Face difficulty in keeping attention on things and get easily distracted.

Avoid tasks that need mental efforts like doing homework.

Doesn’t seem to listen while spoken to

Face trouble in getting the things in order or doing things on time

Face trouble in remembering day to day things

Switching in between activities frequently

ADHD hyperactivity symptoms include:

Demonstrate excessively active behaviors

Runs around & even climb on things inappropriately

Leaves their seats frequently

Fidgeting & even squirming in seats

Talking excessively

Not being able to play or work quietly

Impatient & doest wait for their turn

Blurts out answers even before questions are finished

Feels restlessness

ADHD impulsivity symptoms include:

Face difficulty waiting for their turn

Interrupting conversations & even calling out

Act without thinking

Although specific ADHD symptoms vary from one person to another, a significant number of symptoms must be present for the behavior to be viewed as abnormal. The children/ adults with predominantly inattentive type attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder tend to be less obvious. These children or adults quite often appear quiet. They seem to be underachieving learners and don’t necessarily attract a high level of attention.

The children with ADHD impulsivity & hyperactivity symptoms are relatively harder to overlook. The various other eminent factors that define this particular disorder occur either in 2 or more settings; examples are school & home. The symptoms that appear in children before the age of seven are the ones that cause significant impairment in day-to-day functioning.

The number of children being diagnosed with ADHD has already been more than doubled in the last decade. The reason for this increase is an enhanced awareness level & recognition of ADHD disorder. However, to some extent, it is also due to misdiagnosis & even diagnosis criteria for this neurodevelopmental disorder is not always being applied as strictly and rigorously as it should be.

Apart from the specific characteristics that are listed above, many individuals with ADHD also demonstrate symptoms of various other types of behavioral or psychiatric conditions that furthermore complicates clinical situation like learning disabilities, anxieties and several others disruptive behavioral disorders. Other reasons for kids being impulsive, inattentive, hyperactive are having some health/ emotional issues, learning difficulties or lack of sleep.

There are many distinctive types of behavioral & developmental disorders that cause ADHD symptoms in young kids; thus, it is extremely vital to have the proper assessment for devising the most appropriate treatment strategy.

ADHD treatment

Treatment for ADHD helps relieve symptoms & makes this condition much less problematic in everyday life. A comprehensive assessment of the children is vital while considering the possible diagnosis of this particular disorder. This is because a few of the symptoms can also appear as a consequence of several conditions or situations & due to a high rate of associated or comorbid conditions.

There are different treatment options available for ADHD, depending upon the child & family’s unique needs. The most accurate assessment is extremely eminent for effective treatment of this condition. The comprehensive assessment of ADHD involves meeting with parents, child, ascertaining birth details, developmental, medical, and social and even school history of the kid. Apart from that, behavioral checklists from both & school are found to be extremely helpful.

Pediatrician or psychiatrist most commonly performs the assessment & diagnosis of this particular disorder. Even psychologists are also capable of assessing & diagnosing this disorder. Since a major percentage of children with ADHD have learning/ cognitive difficulties, psychological & neuropsychological testing is found to be extremely helpful for evaluating academic & cognitive skills like intelligence, attention & even executive functioning.

Treatment for ADHD disorder varies depending upon the individual needs of the child. ADHD can be treated by using medications or therapies or a combination of both depending upon the condition. There is also significant evidence that supports the utilization of medications in treating ADHD. However, using medicines, combined with psychological strategies, is most likely to lead to the best possible outcome.

All those kids with mild ADHD symptoms or any developmental or mental health issues most often do well with an extensive range of psychological strategies. Others with difficult to manage symptoms or various other mental health concerns are most often being benefitted from the combination of oral medications & psychological support. There are stimulant medications like methylphenidate, dexamphetamine & pemoline that are most commonly utilized to treat ADHD and found to be extremely effective. But a majority of the experts agree to the fact that treatment for this disorder should address multiple aspects of a person’s functioning, and thus, treatment should not only be confined to the use of medicines alone. Ideally, it should involve devising the most appropriate structured behavioral management program that is required to be consistently applied to both at the school & home. It also involves modification of curriculum, teaching methodologies, parenting education & support at the same time. Currently, 200+ studies have already demonstrated the high-end effectiveness of both medications & psychological treatment strategies.

Does NDIS cover ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)?

No, it doesn’t in itself! Since ADHD can be treated through medications and thus, a person with ADHD symptoms seem to be ineligible for the further NDIS funded support. However, in case it co-occurs with other disorder, then the individual with comorbid ADHD is more likely to qualify for NDIS funded supports. Few of the common comorbid ADHD conditions include the anxieties, learning/cognitive disabilities like dyslexia, and disruptive behavioral patterns.

For diagnosing ADHD symptoms, a comprehensive assessment is needed. As there is a tendency of ADHD to co-occur with other conditions, a detailed and comprehensive evaluation is required. A pediatrician, psychiatrist, or psychologist must assess this particular disorder.

The most accurate diagnosis is extremely eminent for carrying out the appropriate and also effective treatment of this disorder. When the ADHD is severe or co-occurs with one or more conditions, then eligibility of a person for NDIS funded supports is likely. For determining the NDIS eligibility & further steps on applying for the NDIS, please refer to apply for NDIS, see here.

Treatment for ADHD

The most effective treatment strategy for reducing ADHD symptoms involves pharmacological (medicines) & psychosocial (behavioral) therapies. The medicines like methylphenidate, dexamphetamine & even pemoline are found to be quite effective in treating ADHD. These stimulant medicines are being regulated and prescribed only by the practitioners like pediatricians, child psychologists, or neurologists (even by GPs as well in certain circumstances).

However, it has been recommended that treatment for ADHD should not be limited to the medications alone. Thus the combination of medicines & behavioral management techniques is being preferred and is found to be superior compared to treatment through medications alone. Parents’ positive parenting strategies also help the children manage ADHD symptoms and along with the implementation of extensive home & classroom strategies.

Capacity Building Supports assist you in building your skills & independence. As the name suggests, Capacity building supports are designed to build upon your capacity to lead an independent life and participate in the community. Learn more about Capacity building supports & find out how quality service providers can help you in growing your independence & confidence.

Shinning light on NDIS capacity building supports

Capacity building supports have been designed & developed to help the participants build skills & independence in their everyday life and help them per sue their goals.

The capacity building supports are always in addition to the core supports and fully ensure that you are capable of performing all your daily living tasks. Taking nutrition as an example, the core support might be having the daily meals prepared & also delivered to you; however, the capacity-building support is equipping you with all the requisite skills and education for preparing nutritionally balanced meals on your own.

The NDIS, first of all, assess all your precise needs, all your short-term and long-term goals at the time of the planning meeting to assist you in identifying which of the capacity building supports might be required to be funded.

There are overall nine categories of Capacity building supports. However, you won’t be automatically receiving funding for all these. Instead of that, funding for these categories will be decided based on your NDIS plan goals. For instance, if one of your goals is to be much more active in the community, then capacity building support in learning skills will be rendered to you for managing your behavior. Or you will also receive a support worker for attending social activities until the point you become fully confident and equipped with the skills for attending social activities on your own.

There are overall nine categories of Capacity building supports. The goals outlined in your NDIS plan will determine which of the categories you will receive funding for. Since every individual is unique with distinct capabilities & goals, it is extremely crucial to note that not every person will receive the same funding. Thus it is likely that individual won’t be receiving funding for all the below mentioned nine categories.

Unlike the core supports budget, the capacity building support budget can’t be moved from one category to another one. The nine categories have been designated for the funding purposes for ensuring that NDIS distributes the funds appropriately for assisting individuals where they require it the most.

During planning conversation with NDIS, the participants gain a chance to discuss how they would like to manage their NDIS plan & also funding. Ultimately the NDIS will be considering this along with various other factors for identifying the ways plan & funding will be managed.

What is next after planning meeting?

Once you have your planning meeting, your NDIS plan will be reviewed & approved. Depending on the personalized situation and needs, the participant will gain assistance to put the plan into action. This assistance might come to you from the Local Area Coordinator, or you might get help from the Support Coordinator. However, before initiating the process, there are certain simple things that you are required to do.
Read your NDIS plan thoroughly & ensure that it is appropriate. You should also ensure that you can understand all the parts of your NDIS plan & what exactly it means. The participant will also require myGov registration for accessing NDIS myplace portal. So always ensure that you are registered with myGov portal. The myplace portal is a safe, secure site, and you can check out everything about your plan. The participant can look out at his/her NDIS plan, keep track of the budget, and manage services & supports.

You can visit the NDIS website for gaining more information about how participants can use myplace portal. Your NDIS plan will be activated on myplace portal. Along with that, a copy of your NDIS plan will also be emailed to you. It is also a good idea to keep checking the myplace portal each & every day until you receive your NDIS plan.

Getting NDIS plan into action

The NDIS plan comprises of main sections:

Section I- comprises of some personal details

Section II- comprises of participant goals, both short term & long term

Sections III- comprise of support & services that participant requires.

Section III is further broken down into three subcategories:

The assistance that you get from your family members & friendly

The assistance that you receive from services within your community (for example health, education, etc)

The support that you obtain through NDIS

It is your plan that will detail out how much funding you will get. The entire budget will be broken down into three distinct components- core, capacity building & capital.

Core support budget

The core support budget helps you with all your everyday activities, current disability needs, and the related need to work towards your precise goals. The core support budget is the most flexible one.

Capacity-building support budget

This type of budget helps you build your independence and skills for reaching all your long-term goals. Unlike the core support budget type, this type of budget can’t be moved from one support category to another. Thus funding can be utilized only for purchasing approved individual supports that lie in this category of the budget.

Capital Supports budget

The capital support budget involves a higher cost. It includes the pieces of assistive technology, equipment, home/ vehicle modifications. Also, funding for one-off purchases as well that you may require, including Specialist Disability Accommodation. It is extremely crucial to remember that all the funds that lie within this budget type can be utilized for just the specific purpose only & can’t be used for anything else.

Additionally, you have to keep in mind that the core support budget is flexible, and thus you can always organize the supports & services in a manner that best suits you. However, the items within capacity building & capital support budget trend to be fixed. If you have doubts or you are unsure about anything, then you can ask your LAC. Read further about using your NDIS plan from booklet three by visiting the NDIS website.

Self, plan, or agency managed? How to manage your NDIS plan?

During your planning meeting with LAC, you will be asked how you want your NDIS funding to be managed. Since it is the most crucial decision, you need to think about it before you head on to the meeting. Managing your plan is about the ways your supports & service providers will be paid. There are three distinct ways through which the plan can be managed. It is quite eminent to know the difference between the three so that you are in a position to choose the provider that is best for you, your family’s requirements & capabilities.

NDIS Agency Managed

When your plan is agency managed, you can choose the service providers only from the list of all those registered with NDIS. The provider will claim the payment electronically from your NDIS funding. The participants can look at the myplace portal for determining what all claims their service providers are making against the funding and keep track of the budget. By accessing the myplace portal you can track how everything is going on, and you no longer need to worry about the paperwork.

The NDIS will be managing all your bookkeeping along with the records of spending. However, all service bookings must be set up through my place portal.

Self-managed

In this type of funds managing approach, you will be responsible for requesting an invoice from services & support providers once you have availed their service. After that, you will be forwarding the same to the NDIA. The authorities will then transfer the money to your bank account so that you can pay your invoices. Thus in self-managed, you will yourself be handling the financial management aspect of your plan.

The main advantage of a self-managed approach is that you will gain greater flexibility & freedom. The participant will gain access to all supports & services providers, whether registered with NDIS or not. Also, there is a flexibility to negotiate with price as you no longer need to stick to the NDIA price limits. But you need to be organized & carry out all paperwork on your own. Some individuals are quite intimidated by this particular idea of self-managed. However, it is quite worth giving a thought as it imparts a greater level of flexibility, control, and freedom to work with the people of your own choice.

If you are interested in this particular option, try and get in touch with others who have already self-manage their NDIS to get a fair idea of how it is done and what all is involved.

Plan Managed

The plan managed option is available to all participants as NDIS is fully funding it. It is just like self-management; however, you hire an independent organization to do all the work specifically for you under this. The plan managers or plan partners are the specialists who help & support you through handling the day to day administration that comes while managing funds. So with a planning partner, you gain an assurance that you have an independent expert by your side throughout your individualized NDIS journey.

The participant is required to ask for it to be actually included within the NDIS plan during the planning meeting. It comes under the improved life choices category. The money required to pay the plan manager for doing all the work for you will be added to your NDIA plan so that you are not out of your pocket.

Mix

This is the fourth option that many people are not familiar about. In this, you can have a mix of some agency managed & self-managed. So your funding plan can be part self-managed & part agency managed as well. This is advantageous when you don’t want to do all the paperwork on your own and want to gain greater flexibility & control in some areas. For instance, you might want all your capacity building therapy funding to be managed by the agency & want the consumables continence supplies funds to be self-managed.

Which option is best for me?

Since every participant’s situation & needs are different, thus there is no single size fit for all. Many individuals choose plan managed as it provides a greater level of choice, flexibility, control, saves time, and makes the entire managing of NDI funding, tracking & spending easy & streamlined.

It is extremely eminent to remember that you are still in control, whichever of the option you choose. In all the options, the participant chooses the providers and controls when & how the supports & services are to be delivered. These three provisions are just the ways by which your services & supports providers are paid. You can seek more information about managing your plan by visiting the NDIS website & specifically about the self-managing option.

Choosing your NDIS service provider- What to look for?

Finding the right NDIS service provider in Melbourne is an extremely crucial factor in ensuring that all your goals are met. Whenever it comes to organizing the services & supports for you, it is eminent to remember that you are in the driver’s seat. You have control over everything. It might be possible that you are already satisfied & contented with your existing service provider but you should feel locked into it. There is no need to do things in the manner they have been done before as there is always a possibility of improvement. There might be time now to try out something new & better. You might want to do something that you ever wished for but never got the chance.

Many people are not aware that they have any choice. But yes, you have a complete right to choose your NDIS service provider, and it is just the same as choosing anything else you want to purchase. First of all, what is required to do is to work out what you want, do extensive research, take a look all around, and then make a choice. Like anything else, you can also communicate with others what all they have done and what they like about their supports & services providers. Would they recommend them to you?

Putting an agreement in place before you initiate assists out everyone in understanding what all to expect. A service agreement sets out what, how & also when you will be receiving services & supports.

Given below is a list of questions that you might like to consider while choosing your service provider:

Which are the service providers in my area that extend the same supports & services that I require?

Do the services & supports being offered by any of the providers meet my personalized needs? Will they help me out in achieving goals that I have set for myself?

Do these service providers see me as a person with rights?

How will service providers make sure that I have the choice & also control over how specific support & service is being extended to me?

Will the service provider give a guarantee on the flexibility of supports that fits my individual life?

What all skills, talents & experiences do their employees have?

Does the service provider charge a reasonable cost?

What all evidence can be presented before me for depicting that they deliver top quality support & services?

Does the service provider have an appropriate feedback & complaint system in place which is completely independent of service delivery system?

What do other individuals with disabilities or their carers say about the services & support quality that provider renders them?

The NDIS site has additional information to help people find & negotiate with services & support providers. There is also a price guide that can be referred to for finding the maximum costs providers can charge from the NDIS participants.

Know your consumer rights

Whether you pay for a particular product or service on your own or through state/ territory’s NDIS disability care system, you have rights as a consumer.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission has an extensive array of resources to assist the NDIS participants in understanding all their consumer rights. There is a consumer guide for helping out all the participants understand & exercise all their consumer rights. Also, there is an industry guide for all providers to ascertain all their obligations while supplying all goods & services to consumers with disabilities. There are fact sheets, videos & easy to understand information on the ACCC website for individuals with disabilities, their families for understanding all their rights as consumers & seeking help if something goes wrong.

There is also the NDIS Quality & Safeguards Commission, an independent agency established to improve the quality & safety of NDIS supports and services. This commission is responsible for regulating the entire NDIS market and handling all complaints about the quality and safety of all kinds of support & services.

You can access resources for more information available in easy to understand English & LOTE on the NDIS Quality & Safeguards Commission website.

The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) provides support to all individuals with permanent & significant disabilities that are impacting their capability to take part in the day to day activities. There are many ways by which you can manage your NDIS funding.

If one of the ways are chosen by you is not working correctly or require more support & guidance, you can always switch during any time, not only at the time of review but also let the NDIS office know about it. The fact sheet given below provides information to all the individuals who can access NDIS funding & are initiating the planning procedure. It helps you decide upon the most appropriate ways to manage your NDIS funding to support a personal plan.

Listed below are few choices & also the pros & cons of it:

Agency managed

When you choose the NDIS plan to be agency managed to your NDIS funding, the meaning is that the NDIS funds will be paid out directly by the NDIS to the registered services provider. By opting for agency managed plan, the participant can choose only the NDIS registered providers who extend the right support & services with your funds. Such NDIS registered providers will have a direct portal link to the NDIS website. These send all their bills to the NDIS directly once they have rendered their services to the participant. Then the payment is made directly by NDIS. Either the participant or nominee has the provision to directly check out on MyPlace NDIS web portal during any point of time for determining how funds are being tracked, which of the claims have been made & what all are left.

The agency managed option provides the least choice & also control to the participants. However, it is quite a good choice for all those participants who are not looking out for much of the flexibility and just looking for the security of all the registered NDIS providers.

Pros of agency managed NDIS funds.

There is no bookkeeping, upfront cost, and separate bank account needed. The participant is never audited at all.

Cons of agency managed NDIS funds

When you choose the registered NDIS service providers, there is less control, power, and creativity in your hands for spending the funds, and there is little spontaneity. For instance, most registered NDIS service providers have the minimum shift lengths that might not be suitable for your precise needs.

Also, there is a requirement of service agreement & service booking with each & every registered NDIS service provider in Melbourne.

Self-managed

The participants may also choose to manage the NDIS funding for the supports on their own. This you can do either on your own or have the nominee to do this on your behalf. The nominee may be the family member, friend, or carer. So, self-managed funding means the money will go to the participant to spend for meeting your and child’s goals. In this scenario, the participant may choose any of the mainstream support & services providers, and it doesn’t have to disability-specific either or the registered ones.

When you opt for a self-managed plan, it is extremely crucial for you to know that no service provider is obligated at all to adhere to the NDIS fee schedule. So these can decide upon their own fees, charges. This might be good in the circumstances when you are willing to pay the valued support worker higher than the schedule fees. However, this turns out to be bad when the service provider is just one in the entire town, and their charges are ridiculously higher. Also, you are required to open a separate bank account solely for your NDIS funds. (In case of child’s nominee- student bank account in child’s name or even an offset account of you both is workable).

The payment can be made upfront for all the services you utilize and then you can claim it on the NDIS portal and get it reimbursed or put in the claim with the invoice and then make payment to the service provider comes through. It can be done easily through the portal. All payment will be deposited into account within just a few days. However, you are required to keep decent records and all the receipts for auditing.

Pros of self-managed NDIS funds

The participant gains complete control over the NDIS funds. You can choose any of the providers or company to help you meet all your goals (this ensures a higher level of spontaneity). The higher rates can also be paid for valued services & support. You also gain a chance to negotiate for a lower cost for stuff and may also be able to stretch the funds further. There is no requirement of service bookings.

Cons of self-managed NDIS funds

The participant is required to make payment for all the stuff up front at times and has to wait for reimbursement. The record-keeping is just as you could be audited too.

Plan managed

As part of the planning process, you also identify your preference to hire a plan manager to help you manage funds & budget. This type of option offers the same benefits as self-managed one & has no disadvantages at all. Also, NDIS adds extra funds in the plan specifically to assist you in covering up the cost of hiring someone else to do paperwork and making payment to the providers for you. So it’s just like employing your own NDIS funded accountancy professional. Under such provision, the NDIS funds will be reimbursed directly to the registered plan manager of your own choice.

The plan manager will pay the bills send by you or your support service provider can also send out all the bills directly to your plan manager. The participant can either use registered or unregistered providers for extending needed support & services through the plan manager.
However, the Plan Managers are registered, and you use your own accountant or bookkeeper’s services. The money that goes for funding Plan Manager is an extra addition to the plan. It is not going to eat the therapy funds or any other NDIS plan funds. However, if you hire Plan Manager, always ensure that there is a system in which you can log in and see all the claims during any point of time.

Pros of Plan Managed

The main benefit is that participants may choose any provider or organization for all support & services that help meet all their unique goals. This ensures a greater level of flexibility & spontaneity. This might also allow you to negotiate for lower cost or stretch funding further, never audited. Additionally, you never have to worry about record-keeping as well.

Cons of Plan Managed

The major disadvantage under this option is that there is a possibility that your Plan Manager may not pay the service providers as quickly as they would like to. The service providers might be dependent upon the Plan Manager that you would have hired.

Mix of above

In this type of option, the participant may choose to include some of the elements of self-managed and some areas of self-managed type of arrangement. For instance, if you wish to self manage the transport funding for seeking greater flexibility & timeliness of your available NDIS funds and you might want the capacity building therapy funds as agency managed.

What in case the option I chose is no longer working for me?

If the option you have already chosen is no longer working or you require additional support, then you can change the arrangement during any point of time & not just during the review time. For making changes, you are required to contact the local NDIS office.

How to find the Plan Manager?

There is a service provider search function on the NDIS website. It comprises of the list of registered Plan Managers. You can call a few times and also interview them before planning out your meeting and can communicate your NDIS planner who you have chosen. During the interview, ask the plan managers how much time they take to pay bills and how flexible & spontaneous they are. Do they have any specific system in place that checks in with you before each invoice is being paid? Find out whether they have their own online system that lets you access & track the claims any time.

In the end, find out what all supports you would need to achieve all your goals for realizing your vision/ dream.

It is actually the planning that you do to achieve a good life that forms your NDIS plan. So, the more work you do about how you want your life to look like and what all supports and services you require, better will be the outcome of your NDIS planning.
